As you make your plans to succeed, I want to share with you what I consider to be the #1 skill you will need to succeed online. To possess this skill is to avoid what is perhaps the top reason that people fail in business. This skill empowers you to keep more money in your pocket and sleep better at night too. Interested? Here's what this vital skill is not. It's not building a huge list. It's not learning to write a killer sales letter, track ads, create dynamic joint ventures or any of the other skills that every 'guru' tells you that you must master to succeed. The #1 skill you need is the ability to say "no". If you think you don't need this skill answer this question. How many eBooks do you have on your computer right now that you have not read? The reason I elevated saying "no" to my #1 position is a phone call I received from a customer only two weeks ago. Responding to one of my special $9.99 offers a well-meaning fellow called to ask if he could pay via check. He went on to explain that his credit card was maxed out, but he wanted the eBook anyway. Then he revealed that he had 160 eBooks on his computer that he had never read! Intending to learn the Internet marketing business he had accidentally learned how to buy eBooks instead. Not good. Only a few years ago email marketing took off. Our inboxes swelled with "must have", "act now", "never before seen" offers that we gobbled up at a record pace. The next few years will see the e-marketing business explode, causing yet more offers, with more urgency, to come our way. I want to share some of the things that work when it comes to Internet marketing - no hype, fluff. Just what works in the real world. My hope is that by knowing what really works you can keep your hard earned money in your pocket when the hype-meisters come to call. Don't get me wrong, you will need to buy some tools and some information in order to make an online venture successful. You just don't need to buy everything that comes down the pike. In that spirit, here are six things to help you say "no" to the hype and "yes" to the real opportunities. ===> Limit Who You Listen To The bottom line is that you are going to have to trust somebody if you are going to get the information you need to succeed. After all, why reinvent the wheel... right? The truth is that 99% of the people you buy information from are saying the same things. Just knowing that one fact will save you a ton of money and help avoid confusion. My advice is to pick someone and stick with them. There are *plenty* of people to choose from, so do your homework, find someone you can respect, and really dig in to their material. ===> Use Common Sense You've probably heard the saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." That saying has never been more true than now, or applied more accurately than to Internet marketing. Nuff said. ===> Don't fall for the hype And there's plenty of hype to go around. Here's just one example. The way that so-called guru's can show you that they make thousands a day is they *time* their sales to all hit on a particular day or range of days. It's very easy to show a bank statement with thousands of dollars in deposits when you've been sending emails for months announcing your "two day sale". Don't fall for this garbage. Look long term and see what the person telling you how to succeed has done in their overall business. Then choose to listen or not. ===> Do What You Know To Do Just like the person with the 160 books, you won't succeed until you take action. Knowing is far less important that doing. If you really want success in your online business, let me encourage you to take what you think is the best idea you've heard this year and put it into practice NOW. Don't wait for everything to be perfect, for the economy to improve, the market to strengthen or any of the thousand other reasons we wait. Take action now. Do the best you can now. Remember that it's easy to steer a moving car but almost impossible to turn the wheels when you're sitting still. ===> There Is No Magic Formula, Tool, or Quick Fix The perfect marketing method is trial and error. A horribly written ad placed in ezines today is more effective than the perfect ad still sitting in your word processor. By all means do your best, but don't wait for the magic tool because it doesn't exist. Do your best today and strive to improve tomorrow. By doing that you will ensure your success and make time your ally. So what IS the formula to success? Don't get me wrong. I know firsthand that the Internet is the most level playing field known to mankind. The Internet has been very, very good to me and my family. If you have the desire, are willing to work and to learn there is practically no limit to how well you can do online. But you won't get there without taking action and that's what most people just won't tell you. They'd rather sell you their eBook for $19.99. Beyond the ability to say "no" you need to be able to type the words you would say in order to sell your product, a way to deliver those words by email or on a web site, the ability to collect money and a product that actually does some good for people. You will also have to spend some money on advertising and tools to automate your business. That's just how life works. If you have these things you have the magic formula already. Now it's time to go out and make something happen.
