By: Copia

Did you know that iodine is a necessity when it comes to being able to keep a healthy body both inside and out? In the body, iodine is a trace mineral that is able to convert iodide while inside the body. Iodine can be found in many different types of food such as kelp, seafood, plants, sea vegetables, and dairy products, iodized salt and the regular vegetables you can find in your refrigerator. Iodine is a component of Thyroxin.

Now that you know what iodine is, you are probably wondering what benefits it provides to you and your body. With the proper amount of iodine in the body, the mineral is able to improve the condition of the teeth, hair, nails, as well as the skin. It helps to protect the body from exposure to radiation. Iodine is known to help other parts of the body as well.

For example, iodine mainly works with the thyroid gland. About 80% of the iodine in the human body is found in the thyroid. The thyroid, with the help of iodine, is able to produce many different types of hormones, mainly triodothyronine and thyroxine. These hormones play very important roles when it comes to regulating bodily systems, especially the reproductive system. These hormones also allow the body to grow and develop properly.

Since iodine plays a major role in thyroid activity, it also plays a role when it comes to maintaining and having proper metabolism levels and activity throughout the body. Iodine helps the body to burn calories and helps to keep off any excess calories from becoming excess fats after they are stored. The mineral also plays a role in maintaining the energy that the body has. Destroying toxins, iodine is able to keep the body healthy and allows the body to correctly use silicone as well as calcium when needed.

So what happens when you don’t have enough iodine in your body? The results of iodine deficiency are much more serious than you’d probably think. Iodine deficiency occurs in those people who do not eat things such as dairy products, seafood, iodized salt and processed foods. Some children who suffer from an iodine deficiency also have to deal with iodine deficient anemia.

Iodine deficiency brings about symptoms that can become very serious. It can affect things such as feelings. These can range from depression, frustration and mental retardation to weight-gain, thyroid problems and obesity. Iodine deficiency is known to decrease a person’s IQ up to 15 points. According to some doctors and researches, iodine deficiency is one of the causes of mental retardation around the world.

Those suffering from iodine deficiency will have to deal with things such as fatigue, constipation, weight gain, goiters, impaired thyroid operation, dry, scaly skin, decreased fertility and many different types of growth abnormalities. Elders and pregnant women should take in much more iodine than a young child does. Women who are breast-feeding should definitely make sure that they are consuming enough iodine.

If you believe that you are not consuming enough iodine, you can easily take an iodine supplement. Before doing so, it is best to consult your doctor.
